The word “hosting” does not describe a single service, but a variety of services which provide numerous functions to a domain. Having a website and emails, as an illustration, are two separate services despite the fact that in the general case they come together, so most of the people see them as one single service. The truth is, each domain has a couple of DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that manages each particular service - the first one is a numeric IP address, which specifies where the site for the domain is loaded from, while the latter is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that manages the emails for the domain address. As an example, an A record is 123.123.123.123 and an MX record would be mx1.domain.com. Every time you open a website or send an email, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a domain address has and the traffic/message is first directed to that company. In case you have custom records on their end, the web browser request or the email will then be sent to the correct server. The idea behind employing separate records is that the two services employ different web protocols and you could have your website hosted by one service provider and the emails by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Shared Hosting

If you have a shared hosting account with our company and you wish to move either your site or your e-mails to another company, it'll take you literally just two clicks to do this. Our Hepsia CP comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domain names and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you're going to be able to see and change the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you want to use a different e-mail provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the standard 2, it is not going to take more than a few clicks either to add them. You can even set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the greater the priority a particular MX record will have. The propagation of each record that you modify or set up isn't going to take more than several hours and if necessary, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which reveals how long a record will stay active after it is modified or deleted.

You'll also be able to set different priority for the MX records which you create in case you choose to use a third-party email provider and they ask you to set up additional records aside from the two standard ones.
